Finale Frame the Light

Framing the Light has been an eye opening experience. Before today I had thought that anyone can take a photograph. In reality most people take snap shots. It takes skill and practice to be a good photographer. You need experience.

My first photo was taken as soon as we left the school for our first trip around Newark. The class was in front and I was posted up against the brick wall of our school. I loved the texture of the bricks on the wall. My second picture was taken the same day. As we were walking we past an ordinary light pole. I just put my lens against the hole inside of the pole and just clicked and this was what the inside of the pole looked like.

When we finally went back to school we sat next to the Leahy House. I saw the same concept as my first picture but I had fellow classmate Carlos lean against it. I took a previous one and at the end he decided to look up. With the light in his face it looks good.

Final Days Rogelio Hernandez

During my last days in this photography class I have finally grasped the idea of what it takes to be a good photographer. At the beginning it was a challenge because your not as experienced and you don't know how to capture a photo without the proper amount of exposure. Throughout time you finally start getting ideas and you start seeing what type of photographer your going to be by looking at your photos. You might think taking photos are easy, at times it is easy but its hard because there is always something that you know that you can perfect. For anybody that wants to peruse trying something new, photography is an amazing experience for anybody.

During my exhibit I captured many different aspects of life. I took photos of still life, nature study, leading lines and many other things. Its interesting to capture different aspects of life because there is just so much out there for you to learn about and discover. I tend to find interest in nature and still life not only because its the easiest subjects to take photos of but because they are the best things to take pictures of. There are many interesting things you can take photos of, you just have to put in the time to discover something thats worth capturing.

Three of the photos I choose for this blog entry, all made it in the final exhibit. The first one is a picture of a seagull with a simplified background. Another photo I captured was a picture a group of flowers joined together with another simplified background. Last but not least, I took another photo in a library of a row full of books with a leading line. The point of these photos were to try and get the viewer to understand the point of view I tried to capture.

Final Presentation

This project has been a hand full. I have learned many things from how to angle pictures to what to take a photo of. During the beginning of this project I had know idea on how many idea techniques
There were. After a week of class I learned how to take pictures of landscapes, abstractions, fragments, and even people. At first I thought taking portraits of people was easy. After a while I learned that it was a more of a up close and personal interaction. After a few try taking them I became more and more interested in them. I feel like people are the best ways to express emotions

In this photo the techniques I used were fragments. By angling myself in the way I did you get a piece of both buildings forming a beautiful sight. The fact that the two buildings are two different types of material gives it that old vs. new look. When looking for photos I look for things that contrast.

In this photo I noticed the little boy and girl and it reminded me of my younger days in elementary school. These two kids show a nice example of the emotion of innocence, witch is an emotion hard to express. This is a portrait photo.

In this photo my main technique was reflection. As you can see in this building there is a reflection of another two buildings. this photo is awesome because it is simple but yet says so much. When I glance at this photo I am lost . After a while you begin to notice the entire background, and even the beautiful sky.

Final Exhibit Photos

The Post of The End

In my time that I spent in Photography Class I actually learned a lot more than what I ever expected. At first I thought it was a light class, but it turns out that the material that was introduced was actually quite dense in information. For example I actually thought we were just going to take pictures and upload them but it turns out there was so many things we needed to learn about before we could even use a camera. All in all I learned many things, like to look at things from different perspectives, and I also learned that I can be a good photographer now at any special occasions.

In this first picture it is actually a metal gate that was at the edge next to the water when the class took it's first trip to NYC. My initial intentions were to actually catch the Island in the background while framing it in the square shape of the gate. It turns out when I uploaded the picture, my depth of field and focus point was all on the gate while the background was blurred out. After looking at the picture more, it came out better then what I wanted because it gives it a specific look, that makes people stop and try to examine the photo.

The next photo is one of my favorites, because when I took the picture I was not trying to get anything special. I just wanted to take a picture of an old telephone from a weird point of view. When I looked at the photo the angle and perspective of the picture was one where it kid of looks like a gargoyle, or a mask of some sort. It turns out many people look at it and are drawn in by it's mysterious appearance.

The last photo was taken in the New York City Public Library, and it was particularly intriguing because it looks like I took this picture in pitch darkness of the night. The truth is there was a window right next to it that would come out over-exposed on the camera. So what I decided to do was turn down the exposure to about -3/-4 and the camera only caught the light radiating from soft lighting of the chandeliers. It was a great mixture of light to absolute darkness.

Final Days Jose Dominguez

For the final days of class i feel that i have improved a lot on my photography skills. This is one of my best photographs. I took this on the first day of class and i feel that i did a good job displaying a reflection of the tree on the water that was on the stone. I also like this picture because of the nature in the background. This photo being taken on the first day of class also makes it more special because i had no prior photography knowledge before this picture was taken.

This picture made it into my final exhibit and it was taken in the church of Saint Benedicts Prep. I like this picture because of the way i framed the picture and was able to fit what i wanted in the picture.Without this class the idea to photograph this would have never came to me. This class gave me a lot of ideas to photograph. I would say this class inspired this picture.

This picture was taken in New York. This was the first picture i took when we arrived there. This was also our first time as a class to New York. This picture is in my exhibit because of the way i captured the orange line leading to the mysterious person in the back. This picture was one of my best even though on that particular day all my pictures came out blue cause of my auto balance being messed with.

The good times of Noah Leeds

To me I had thought that my final project went really well.  We had picked nine photos for the final exhibit and I'm very proud of my photos.  Soon we will have to show our final presentation to the whole school.  I and many others thought that my photos were very good.  I hope that the rest of the school likes them and appreciates them also.  All of my photos show what I have learned.  this must mean that I've learned that any camera can take a nice photo.

I have a very nice photo of an onion flower.  I had found this flower in Union Square park and it caught my eye.  I personally really like the nature study type photos.  I took this photo from far and zoomed in to take the photo.  I also had to focus on just the flower to make the photo nice.

The second photo I used was also from my final exhibit.  I called it the Leading Citi because it is a bunch of Citi bikes line up making the compositional idea leading lines.  I also used this photo because it shows the bikes leading towards the person directly in the background.  I was so happy when I saw the opportunity to capture this photo.  Many people took photos of the bikes but I was the only one who took the photo from this angle.

The final and third photo was a photo I called Rust.  I had taken this photo on my own time so it made me really proud of this photo.  Many people have said things like "What is that?" or "Wow that's so cool!"  Dr.Lansang had told our class that if a person asks what that is in the photo, it means it is a good photo.  This compositional idea was fragment because it is part of the gate in front of my house.  It also has the name RUST because the gate is a little rusty.

My Final Exhibit - Elijah A.

My final exhibit shows most of the things that I have learned during this spring phase project.I have learned that I do not need a fancy SLR camera to take abstract photos.I have also learned to take photos in a unusual  point of view. I have learned to take photos using photographic ideas. I have learned and memorized photographic ideas in this course.

In this class I have took many abstract photos.Very few portraits that I have took in this class. The three photos that I  have taken all include pattern and leading lines. there is one with texture which is the photo i called ropes.they all have the technique of simplifiy the background. Those are on of the many techniques that I have learned in this course.

In the photo that i have called keyboard you  can clearly tell that part of the object is in focus because you can see all the details of it. you can see all of the dust on this keyboard which means it is in focus. one of the texutres that is in my ropes photo which is called rust. In that photo there is leading lines which I take in most of trips to NYC.I also take abstract photos which all of these three photos.

Final Captured Photos

My overall experience of the class was very enjoyable. My favorite days consisted of having lunch at Chipotle. Traveling on the Path to New York City was always memorable each and every trip. Framing the landscape of diverse faces and unusual attire captured my attention. Walking through New York's landmarks was phenomenal, especially looking at the Big Apple with a new perspective. I feel as if I have unlocked a new fascination and aspiration to improve on my photography skills and a desire to take pictures.

I have recognized in a few of my exhibit photos, the main focus of the image are hands. Hands have a variety of connotations. Hands represent power, strength, love, peace, destruction, and other similar ideas. I named my first image "intimate" because when a couple is willing to hold hands in public it shows the couple's bond and closeness. The next photo of the light switch came out focused which is quite strange, considering the darkness and my inability to even see the light switch in the cameras lens. I am also intrigued by the angle because you are unable to tell whether the light switch is on or off.
My last photo "No No" as it says in the photo is really special to me because I admire street photography. Street photography involves snapping pictures of people. People can either brighten or darken the mood of a picture and bring a spectrum of emotions. I grasped a wealth of knowledge in this course and I hope to develop on my newly found skills. I had an amazing time composing pictures this spring and it will be extremely hard to have a better spring phase next year.

FINAL- JOEY

The Photography class that I have been participating in for the past four weeks was a great experience. I learned more and more everyday and I’m even able to teach my mom things on how to set up and work her camera. I really enjoyed the class trips to New York and never really realized that you could take such kinds of photos that are displayed in my folders. I never had the eye to look for a photo that is not a portrait. This class really made me think and choose on the objects that I could take a photo that had the proper compositional and photography ideas. Honestly, I never knew of such terms that had to with a simple photo. For example: A photo of a street could be leading lines, repetition, lines ending in the corners, and landscape. These are all ideas that are just displayed in a simple photo of a street. Everyone in my family has taken some type of photography class except for me so when they were all using the cameras and talking to each other about their classes, I never could join in. Now, I can probably talk to them and teach them more about photography then they know.

The "Black Sun" is a photo of a lamppost. I thought this photo was ok when I first saw it, but then it caught my eye when going through my photos for the final exhibit. It has leading lines going up to the 'sun' itself. I thought the way I focused the photo made it look cool because the 'sun' was out of focus but it still catches your eye. Also, this photo is an example of landscape and simplify the background, which to me is probably the most important compositional idea. It helps clear the main point of interest because if there was something in the background, then maybe the person would have been drawn to the background object. This photo is also an example of balance.

The "Monastery's Organ" is a photo of the Organ in the Monastery. This photo's main compositional idea is balance. The photo is perfectly balanced with the organ itself and the shadows of Mary on each side. What also makes this photo neat is the light-and-shadow effect. The shadow creates a cool image and the Organ itself has a cool lighting effect because of the ISO of 3200.

The "American Photographers" is an example of Street Photography in Times Square. This woman was taking a photo of something and at that exact moment I saw her, I thought it was neat. This is an example of decisive moment and juxtaposition. If a moment passed, she would have been gone so it was only the right timing for me to capture this image. Although I had the idea and was waiting for someone to go there, I still had to act fast. This is also an example of juxtaposition because it is ironic and it was planned in a way.

the newyorker

Yesterday while in  New York, we ventured from  36th St to the massive Empire State Building all the way to the red stairs, making a few pit stops at the New York Public Library, and Times Square. The types ofphotos I tried to capture were landscapes and street photography. A lot of time, I was looking up so most of the photos I took were flags, statues, building and signs.

The photo of the flags and the walk sign I took was something that caught my eye because they all shared a color:  white, red or blue. The picture of the light was a chandelier inside the library. The way I captured the photo was by positioning myself under and changing my aperture to its smallest opening.

I felt like I accomplished more this time in NewYork than last. I took better photos in my own opinion because it was my second time doing it and I was more experienced . The trip was fun because I knew where I was and I felt like I knew what to take a photo of. I hope on Wednesday able to take a lot more of abstract photos.

A Day in Midtown

Yesterday when we went to New York we went to many places. We were in Midtown and saw the empire state building, and went to the New York public library. When we split up into our groups Thomas, Alfahtee, Joey, Noah, Elijah, and I took pictures in times square and at the red stairs. The pictures that I took yesterday consisted of mostly street photography. Our group walked a lot and went to Chipotle for lunch. I think that it was a very successful trip.

In this photo I took a picture in the New York public library of a line of lamps. These lamps act as leading lines to the man on his laptop. So the main point of interest in this photo was the man. he's perfectly in focus and is on the far left corner. The photograph was a little underexposed though (Not enough light). My second photo is basically of garbage I found on a ledge by a construction site. It consists of a can of V8 Juice in a cup and a cup of coffee I took two photos of these objects. One with the V8 in focus and the other with the empty cup of coffee in focus in the background. I decided that the first picture that I took would be more appealing to someone than the second so I chose this one. I also Decided not to put the V8 in the middle so I could get the coffee cup in the background. This is known as the rule of thirds.

I felt pretty good about my photos yesterday even though they were mostly people and street photography. I didn't do a great job but I could have done better with the variety of photos I shouldn't have done all my photos on people. The trip was successful though. We also went to Chipotle. For the final trip I hope to put everything I learned in this course together and put it to work.

Midtown Manhattan Madness

Yesterday May 19 the photography class and I went to Midtown Manhattan. We say the beautiful Times Square and the New York City Public Library. Yesterday i took a variety of pictures but mostly fragments, portraits, landscape, and portraits. Honestly there really isn't a lot of nature study. I experienced a lot of different things while there. I viewed the different culture in Midtown.

Yesterday I tried a decisive moment that actually worked. I took a picture of a women on the side walk that posed. The candid part of that was I caught people looking at her buttox. My second best picture was a fragment of a table but framed was an x that looked good.

Today as I was looking at yesterday's photos I felt good.  I feel as if I had done a good job accomplishing our goal. The trip was fun. I liked the fact that we were given an extreme amount of freedom. On our final trip tomorrow I hope to use the skills that we've been taught throughout the whole project.

Street photography.

Yesterday we went to midtown Manhattan. One of the main places we saw were the red stairs, a place where many tourist visit and people do the craziest things. Since yesterday was the last day to take pictures that could possibly be added to our exhibit, I decided to take landscapes, street photography and advertising photography. I was trying my best to take as many good photos as possible. Having my camera and eyes always ready for situations that would just appear and looking for nice landscapes.

One of my best photos from yesterdays trip (seen at the right), portrays symmetry and balance. I waited until i got left behind to take this picture so no one would be standing in the isle. My main point of interest is the symmetry of the chandeliers that are hanging from the ceiling.

In the photo to the left, i took this photo using the technique decisive moment as these people do yoga in front of the red stairs in New York.

Midtown Manhattan

Street photography can be known as "OG", or in the unabbreviated word "off guard" photography. Candid means unposed and informal which is the definition of street photography. Unplanned, caught off guard and complete exposure of the person that you are capturing. The five techniques of street photography are juxtaposition, decisive moment, surrealism, symbols, and consistency. These techniques can be used to catch people doing the weirdest things in public and they can be used to force meaning on a picture that isn't first seen.
My favorite technique in street photography is decisive moment. Mainly because It captures a moment in time that would have changed in a blink of an eye if you weren't ready to take the picture. Below is a example of decisive moment in street photography. As you can see the man is laughing having a good time. A second later, the smile would have been gone and whatever he was laughing at May no longer have been funny.
Since this was my first try at street photography, it was kind of awkward to take pictures of complete strangers in public. I soon found out that people in New York don't care about getting their picture taken. Some people actually pose or make funny faces for the camera. Overall, I really enjoyed my first time doing street photography. It was different from what I usually take pictures of and although it did put my put my comfort zone, I did learn from it.

what Is NY made of ?

Street photography for me means to capture the everyday moments of A typical day . In this Case we went to New York . New York has a different flow than new jersey , everything is fast paced and spontaneous. Some may say NY is weird ,But then again, who is to say what normal is? In New York We took pictures of strangers in public spaces in order to capture a moment that last forever. and emotion that is able to express a lifetime worth of living.

Yesterday we went to New York and took photographs of people in Midtown Manhattan. Something that I noticed about yesterday in particular was that people are used to seeing cameras aimed at buildings and monuments, statues and architecture. But most of the people seemed surprised when they saw the eye of the camera staring at them , focusing on their actions , diligently waiting for the camera to blink it's eye and record a moment in history that will last a lifetime . People seemed surprised because in New York it seems like no one individual person stands out in the crowd and to have a photograph taken of them seems weird. The picture to the right and below are two photographs that caught my attention because they express a couple of things . The clock represents a time in history , a time in where progress was something everyone waited for. Time in essence is one of the heaviest intangible weights one can carry.  In the next photograph we see the progress that was long awaited for.  A progress that is essential in understanding what New York is all About.

On the Streets Within Union Square

Candid is what street photography mainly consist of. Whether it be the candid pictures of the streets or of the nearby pedestrians. Street photography has five different branches. Decisive moment which involves you taking the picture at the exact time when your subject makes a decision to do something. Juxtaposition is the irony of the picture when it contradicts, for example old vs. new light vs. dark. Surrealism is captivatingly odd. Image interaction, it is funny and clever. When doing symbol street photography think arrows, symbols, signs.

My good example of street photography was good because it was juxtaposition. The sign said The Normal Heart but passing by was a lady. I caught the women with motion blur and it was also raining. Therefor, it gave a gloomy impression on the picture.

When I was doing street photography I felt out of place. Street photography isn't really my strong suit. Throughout the whole trip I felt like I had not taken any really captivating pictures. I really hate taking street photos with a passion. I'd rather take pictures of textures and patterns.

Framing Midtown

On May 19th the photography class and I travelled to midtown New York City. We strolled our way up to the New York Public Library and split up into different groups and went on our merry ways. My group of Joe, Noah, Rohan, Alfahtee, and Elijah made our way to the middle of Times Square staring and capturing the overwhelming structures and lights. We then headed to Chipotle for lunch and afterwards to tasti-D-lite for dessert. I photographed mostly portraits and included some abstracts and fragments.

I chose two pictures one of a hand of a statue which I believe shows emotion. This image is abstract and a fragment which strays away from last week's project of street photography. The hand stands out and conveys a feeling of emptiness and fulfillment. My second photo really stands out to me because this street photograph shows the chaotic background of Times Square and then the calm and peaceful focus on the father  and son. This is definitely a decisive moment photo because one second later his head is turned the other way and the father and son intimate moment is lost.

The final trip I hope to be more daring and take more picture of people. I felt proud and confident of my pictures and my ability in taking photographs. I'm extremely proud of my exhibit photos and the meaning behind all these images. I'm glad I took this course because now I'm confident with my skills that I now possess and display them to the world.
