Welcome to New York City

Within this term we've learned countless things about photography as well as a photographers techniques to capture a certain perspective. A few of these techniques stuck out to me. One being focus . Ive learned that your point of attention should always be in focus. I have also learned about the rule of thirds, symmetry, and Depth of Field (DOF). Rule of thirds is when you put your point of attention in one of the third quarters of the frame. Symmetry is when everything within the frame is balanced, and DOF is controlled by aperture. The higher the aperture the greater DOF and the reciprocal.

When we arrived in NYC many of these compositions and techniques manifested themselves. When I saw symmetry I centered myself as well as the subject in the frame to where each side was symmetrical and balanced. When I wanted to focus on one point of attention I used a smaller DOF. I used the windows to catch the reflections of others. Patterns were apparent as well.

The three best photographs that I took in NYC have to do with patterns and reflection, symmetry, and leading lines. The first picture is of a building with many windows in a pattern. Another building across reflects off of these windows to imply reflection within the photograph. Narrow brick lines are in between these windows in box shapes. My second photo is of the corner of a large steel rod with 2 smaller rods extending out of the sides diagonally. This adds symmetry. Each side was perfectly balanced in the frame. My last photograph is of large nails nailed into massive stone walls. These were lined together one after the next to where they lead to the exit.
